Up until 1997 this magnificent fortress was a prison and before that a military camp. It was built in order to prevent the French from attacking Spain via the Pyrenees after the treaty of the Pyrenees signed with France in 1659. The massive military fortress housed 6,000 men and 500 horses with water tanks holding up to 40 million gallons of water in the “Cathedral of Water”. Take the guided tour as it would be the best few hours spent using 4x4 Jeeps and dinghies to visit every corner of the fortress.
